Engagement Rings

An engagement ring is the symbol for eternal love encircling the betrothed couple. The circle has always represented eternity and was a perfect option to symbolize a love that would last forever. Early engagement rings were very simple and usually made out of iron or gold and were just a simple loop. It was 1477 when the Archduke Maximilian of Hamburg presented his betrothed, Mary of Burgundy, an engagement ring that had the first diamond set into the ring. The diamond represented beauty and everlasting love due to its properties and when combined with the circle of the band became the symbol for a lasting marriage. As diamonds became more available the engagement ring changed from a simple iron loop to what we see today. Tiffany and Company assisted when they released the 6-pronged diamond engagement ring in 1886.

With each passing era the engagement ring has changed in style and composition from simple ornamentation to individually designed pieces. The average amount spent for a engagement ring in 2012 was $5000. Whether you are getting a simple ring or something that has a lot of carets and comes in a pretty blue box just remember that the ring itself is the representation of your eternal and lasting love. The most important thing in regards to the engagement ring is not the ring itself but the finger you are putting it on.
